Vol. 110 No. 9

Financial Resolutions. - Resolution No. 6—General.

I move:—

That it is expedient to amend the law relating to customs and inland revenue (including excise) and to make further provision in connection with finance.

There is one point of information which I should like to get now from the Minister. As I understand it, the price of tea and sugar to hotels and catering establishments will be increased as a result of the arrangements made in the Budget. Will that apply also to canteens in works, to places where workers get a cheap meal during intervals in their work? Will the price of tea and sugar to works canteens be increased as well as to hotels and catering establishments?

The phrase used throughout is "hotels and catering establishments". I can consider what "catering establishments" will cover. I should like to make it cover as much as possible.

Obviously, because it will save money; but I suggest it is the wrong type of person to save money on.

The people who are getting tea in these establishments are also getting cheaper beer, cheaper stout and cheaper tobacco.

So long as we have cheap beer, the country is safe.

That appeals to the total abstainer members in the Minister's Party.

Progress reported; Committee to sit again to-morrow.
