Vol. 110 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dunquin Pier.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what has been the total cost involved by his Department in the work of inspecting and reporting on the condition of the pier at Dunquin, Dingle, County Kerry; and whether it is proposed to undertake the work of reconstructing this pier at an early date.

The cost to date of inspecting and reporting on the condition of this pier by engineers from the Office of Public Works is approximately £37.

Before a grant from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote can be made available for a minor marine work, it is necessary, inter alia, that the county council concerned should undertake to maintain the structure and its approach, on the completion of the works.

The approach to Dunquin Pier presents a difficult problem and various alternatives have been discussed between the Office of Public Works engineers and the county engineering staff with a view to the preparation of a scheme at a cost commensurate with its public utility. Until agreement is reached on this matter it is not possible to say whether a grant for the work can be made.
