Vol. 110 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distress in Galway Bog Areas.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether the minor employment schemes already in the hands of the Office of Public Works will be put into operation at an early date to relieve distress in the bog areas of the Slieve Aughty mountains.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply of the 15th April, 1948, to questions Nos. 57 and 58 by Deputy Finucane and Deputy Killilea respectively, in which I stated, inter alia, that provision was being made for the employment of displaced turf workers on the improvement of accommodation roads to lands and villages which, presumably, are minor employment schemes of the kind referred to in the question. The intention is that such schemes, where available, will be put into operation in turf areas for which work on county roads and drainage maintenance cannot be found.
