Vol. 110 No. 10

Written Answers to Questions. - Bread Rationing.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the anticipated allocation of wheat to this country under the European recovery programme, it is proposed to end bread rationing and, if so, when.

The world bread grain supply position is still serious and these commodities remain subject to allocation by the International Emergency Food Committee. No allocations have so far been recommended by that body for the period subsequent to the 30th June next. It is not, therefore, correct to assume that the operation of the European recovery programme will of itself ensure that this country will obtain its full requirements of foreign wheat. I cannot at this stage indicate when it may be possible to discontinue the rationing of flour and bread.
