Vol. 110 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Strike of Beet Factory Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the grounds on which he refused to receive a deputation representing the workers on strike in the beet factories.

I understand that the matter under dispute was investigated by the Labour Court in February of this year, and was covered by a recommendation made by the court, which was issued on the 3rd March last. This position was disclosed to me from a statement made by representatives of the workers who were received by a senior officer of my Department towards the end of March when the demands on my time made it impossible for me to meet a deputation. In the circumstances I now consider that it would be appropriate that any representations which the workers may have to make should be submitted to the Labour Court with a request for reconsideration.

Is it correct that the Minister for External Affairs received such a deputation as is referred to in the question?

That does not arise out of my reply.

I think it does. The question relates to the reception of a deputation from persons in the employment of the Irish Sugar Company who are on strike. Is it correct that the Minister for External Affairs received such a deputation and, if so, why?

I have been asked about a deputation which sought an interview with me and I am answering for myself only.

May I ask the Minister if he will take an early opportunity of seeing the parties affected in this dispute with a view to arriving at a satisfactory conclusion or, if I do not put it too strongly, will he consider doing so?

I am prepared to consider any step that may help towards ending any dispute.
