Vol. 110 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Utility Societies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether there is a public utility society in South Kerry as defined by the relevant Act, which provides facilities for the erection of houses; and, if so, whether he will state: (a) the name of the secretary and the number of members who constitute it; (b) the address of its headquarters in South Kerry; and (c) whether it is necessary for an applicant for assistance to make a lodgment before he is accommodated by the society.

Two public utility societies in South Kerry are registered under the provisions of the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1893. They are Killarney Urban Rural and District Public Utility Society Limited and Killorglin Public Utility Society Limited, whose registered offices are situate at Arus Antoine, Cill Airne, Chiarraidhe, and The Square, Killorglin, County Kerry, respectively.

In the annual returns for 1946, which are the latest available, the secretary of the Killarney Urban Rural and District Public Utility Society Limited is stated to be Domhnall Ua Donnchadha, and the number of members is given as nine, each holding one £1 share fully paid. The return of the Killorglin Public Utility Society Limited indicates that the secretary is Mr. M. O'Neill and the number of members is given as seven, each holding £1 share on which 10/- per share has been paid.

The registered rules in each case provide that each member shall hold at least one share of the nominal value of £1 in the society, but beyond this the rules do not require a member to lodge any moneys with the society.
