Vol. 110 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rates Relief in Belturbet.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is prepared to make grants for the relief of rates, applicable to agricultural land—as distinct from building sites— in the urban districts of Belturbet, County Cavan, in view of the extensive acreage contained therein in relation to the size of the town and population thereof.

Mr. Murphy

The allocation of the agricultural grants cannot be altered except by legislation. There is no power to make a grant for the relief of rates on land in Belturbet urban area. Any part of the agricultural grant transferred by a county council to an urban area is now payable into the municipal fund of the urban council and land in the urban area is rated in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act, 1946.
