Vol. 110 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Road Work.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the county, accommodation and bog roads in South Kerry require immediate attention, particularly in congested districts; and if, in view of the proposed scheme for the employment on this work of persons formerly engaged on turf production, he will take steps to allocate the necessary grants for the repair and maintenance of these roads at the earliest possible date.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of the statement issued by the Government Information Bureau on the 13th April regarding the employment of persons hitherto engaged on turf production, he will favourably consider the employment of this class of men on the repair and maintenance of county roads in South Kerry, particularly in Valentia Island, which are at present in a very bad state of disrepair.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 91 and 92 together.

A grant of £18,000, subject to a local contribution of £6,000, has been notified to the Kerry County Council for schemes to provide employment for persons engaged for work on turf production last year. The selection of the works has not yet been finally made by the local authority, but I think the Deputy may take it that appropriate allocations from the sum of £24,000 will be made for road works in the areas mentioned in his question.
