Vol. 110 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cavan Road Repair Work.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that very considerable hardship is being caused to the workers in County Cavan by reason of the fact that the county council has decided to proceed with road repair work by means of private contract, and if, as this system has been found in practice to mean reduction of staff, he will investigate the matter with a view to ensuring that unemployed workers of Cavan are employed upon road work in the maximum possible numbers; and, further, if he will consider the advisability of directing the council to revert to the system of direct labour.

I have this matter under consideration and I hope to be able to issue my decision within the course of this week.
