Vol. 110 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Meat.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the recent increase of 2d. per lb. in the price of meat constitutes a great hardship on poor people and what steps he proposes taking with a view to remedying the position.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave in Dáil Éireann on the 14th April to questions concerning meat prices, from which he will observe that he is incorrect in his reference to a recent increase of 2d. per lb. in the price of meat. In agreeing, with reluctance, to the increase of just over 1d. per lb. which I authorised, I was not unmindful of the consequences to consumers and the position will be adjusted as soon as circumstances allow.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, has further consideration been given to the possibility of instituting some system of subsidy? That is one of the considerations that might be borne in mind.

Suggestions along those lines have been made and all such suggestions have been considered.
