Vol. 110 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of County Mayo Farms.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what steps have been taken to acquire the farm of Mr. Patrick Cunningham, Gortskehy, Receivable Order No. T.484/3, Record No. S.6513, County Mayo, for the relief of local congestion.

The Land Commission have instituted proceedings for the resumption of the holding of Patrick Cunningham, lands of Gortskehy on the estate of Gilmartin, Record No. S.6513, County Mayo. At this stage it is not possible to say whether the lands will become available for distribution.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Mr. Mellett, Coolisduff, Kilmaine, County Mayo, is in possession of a large untenanted farm; and, if so, whether he will take the necessary steps to have this farm acquired for redistribution amongst the small landholders of the area.

The Land Commission do not propose to take any action at present regarding the acquisition of the lands of Coolisduff owned by Michael Mellett.

Can the Minister say what is meant by the term "untenanted land", as mentioned in these questions.

That is a separate question but, I would add, a very important one. The term "untenanted land" means, roughly, land not necessarily non-residential. The Deputy may take it that the term would cover a farm that would be without tenants having a tenant right on it. That perhaps is a rather vague way of expressing its meaning but the terms "tenanted land" and "untenanted land" are very complicated.

And ones on which there has been disagreement.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Mr. Fair, Ummon, Foxford, County Mayo, is in possession of a large untenanted farm; and, if so, whether he will take proceedings to have this farm acquired for the relief of local congestion.

The Land Commission are aware that Mr. Robert Fair and another are in occupation as joint tenants of a holding containing 187 acres in the townland of Ummon and have at present under consideration the question of acquiring part of these lands for the relief of local congestion.
