Vol. 110 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cleaning of Kerry Rivers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the cleaning of the Gweestrin, Dorauragh and the Keel rivers in the townlands of Coolroe South, Ballymalis, Slievegaura, Kilbonane, Culeeny More, Listry and Knockagowna, Kilnarovanagh, Faha East and Faha West, is of such magnitude that it cannot be undertaken within the scope of either the Minor Drainage Schemes or the Emergency Schemes Vote; and, if so, whether he will take the necessary steps to arrange for the adoption of a special scheme for the cleaning of these rivers.

The drainage work referred to by the Deputy is outside the scope of the minor schemes provided for under the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote. The question of improving conditions will be considered in due course in connection with the formulation of a comprehensive drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, for the River Laune catchment area, in which the rivers are situate. I could not at this stage, however, give any indication of the period which may elapse before such a scheme can be considered.

Certain areas affected in this district have been surveyed. Can the Parliamentary Secretary indicate when the survey of the remaining areas will be completed?

At this stage, I cannot.
