Vol. 110 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Longford Man's Death.

asked the Minister for Justice if he could arrange that the adjourned inquest upon Bernard Casey, of Drumlish, County Longford, who died at the Curragh, County Kildare, as a result of bullet wounds received while he was a prisoner at Tintown Internment Camp in December, 1940, should now be resumed; further, if he could arrange that all known witnesses be summoned to testify as to how the above-named Bernard Casey met his death.

The inquest referred to was completed and a verdict was returned on 17th December, 1940. Evidence was restricted in accordance with Article (2) of the Emergency Powers No. 47 Order, 1940, and the verdict was "That Bernard Casey died from shock and hæmorrhage from a gunshot wound in the chest, that the entrance wound was at the back and the exit wound at the front."

In view of the fact that this man, Bernard Casey, was an unconvicted internee and that his loss to his family is a very considerable one, would the Minister be prepared to examine the position with a view to providing his dependents with compensation for his death?

That is a separate question.

If the Deputy puts down a question of that nature it will be dealt with.

There is no mention of compensation in this question.
