Vol. 110 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Review of Transport System.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can state when it is hoped to bring the whole transport system of the country under the review which he indicated was envisaged in reply to a supplementary question on the 11th March last and if, pending such review, he will convey to Córas Iompair Éireann that it is the policy of the Government that road services should not be further expanded at the expense of rail traffic.

The review of the transport system to which I referred in reply to a supplementary question in the Dáil on 11th March will be undertaken as soon as preliminary inquiries which I have initiated have been completed.

I agree that it would be inadvisable in the meantime to extend road services where such action would be detrimental to rail services, and I am communicating to that effect with Córas Iompair Éireann and the other public transport companies.

Will the Minister take such steps as are necessary to ensure that the plan already drafted by Córas Iompair Éireann some six to nine months ago for the closing down of all railways west of Claremorris as an initial step, and ultimately west of Athlone, will not be put into operation?

That is the Clann na Poblachta plan.

I think Deputy Lehane may take it that that plan will not be put into operation.

And never was in existence.
