Vol. 110 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in Corrib Tributaries.

asked the Minister for Finance whether in addition to the schemes proposed to be undertaken by the Galway County Council for the easing of the flooding on the tributaries of the Corrib, he intends to sanction a minor relief scheme in respect of this work.

Apart from this question, I have not received any representations, and I have no information, concerning a minor relief scheme in the area in question.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is considerable flooding caused along both sides of the tributaries that flow into this particular lake? I think that the Parliamentary Secretary had representations made to himself directly about it.

I am very well aware of that fact, and I am surprised that the Deputy does not realise that these tributaries are in the Corrib catchment area, an area in which millions will have to be spent on the draining of it. Therefore, this does not in any way qualify for, or come under, a minor relief scheme.

Any sort of a special scheme would be of help to those people. I would ask the Parliamentary Secretary to take up the matter, particularly in view of the statement made recently to the effect that the Corrib is going to be lowered some time in the future by ten or 12 feet.

That may happen.

The Galway County Council——

If the Deputy has a supplementary question to ask he should ask it.

Is there any assistance to come in the near future from the Board of Works to help to relieve the flooding along the banks of certain rivers which the Parliamentary Secretary knows as well as I do?

As regards drainage, I would ask the Deputy to read the report that has been made on it.

There is no hope that you are going to do anything for those people?

Do not be led astray. That is not so.
