Vol. 111 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Defence Force Medals.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is now in a position to state when it is proposed to issue medals to members of the Local Defence Force who served during the period of the emergency.

I am not yet in a position to state when the medals for the members of the Local Defence Force, who served during the emergency, will be available for issue. The delay is due to difficulties in regard to the manufacture of the medals. So far as is practicable my Department is making every effort to have the medals available at the earliest date.

Does the same answer apply to men who served in the Defence Forces during the emergency? Will they get their medals at the same time?

I think that the die has been received with regard to the Army medals but there is some delay with regard to some other feature. I am not certain of that.

In view of the fact that the die has been received for the medals to be issued to members of the Defence Forces, can the Minister indicate whether these medals will be issued shortly?

They certainly will be given with the greatest possible speed. The thing is under day-to-day consideration.
