Vol. 111 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shooting at the Curragh Internment Camp.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will take immediate steps to arrange a thorough investigation of all the facts relating to the shooting of the late Bernard Casey at the Curragh Internment Camp in December, 1940, with a view to (a) determining the degree of culpability resting with those responsible for the death of this young man, and (b) payment of compensation to Bernard Casey's family.

This occurrence was fully investigated at the time, and subsequently formed the subject of an official statement issued through the Government Information Bureau.

I have read the file of papers dealing with this incident and am satisfied that any further investigation would serve no useful purpose.

There is no statutory authority under which compensation could be paid, as suggested by the Deputy.
