Vol. 111 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Parish Halls.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will say whether it is intended to erect parish halls in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area; and, if so, whether he will state the location of such halls; whether sites have been acquired or plans prepared, and when it is expected to commence building.

No proposals have been submitted to the Department. I am aware that proposals were under consideration for the improvement of existing library centres and the provision of new centres which could be used as village halls. The matter cannot, however, be considered until the housing programme is more advanced.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would the Minister consider giving practical encouragement to local initiative which has already been instigated towards the development of the scheme for the erection of parish halls in the Dún Laoghaire and Rathdown area?

I would like to point out to the Deputy that under Part V of the Local Government Act, 1941, a county council has power to provide, furnish and maintain village halls.

Would the Minister give practical encouragement to local initiative in the matter of erection?

Yes, but the Deputy will appreciate that nothing can be done in the immediate future.
