Vol. 111 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what is the position in relation to the lands of Mrs. Hyland, Togher, Hollymount, County Mayo, and if it is the intention of the Land Commission to have them acquired before November, 1948.

Proceedings are in progress for the acquisition of an area of 168 acres of the land of Togher, held by Mr. and Mrs. Hyland. At the present stage of the proceedings the Land Commission cannot say whether the lands will be acquired by November next.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Mr. Thomas J. Campbell has three parcels of nonresidential land, situated at Rathscanlon and Kilbride, Swinford, County Mayo, and, further, that this land is now being offered for sale, and if he will consider taking over the lands for relief of the congestion which exists in the locality.

The question of resuming Mr. Thomas J. Campbell's lands at Rathscanlon and Kilbride is under investigation by the Land Commission.

asked the Minister for Lands whether any steps have been taken to acquire the large farm of Mr. Garrett Nally, Roundfort, Hollymount, County Mayo, for the relief of small land holders.

There are no proceedings pending in the Land Commission in respect of Mr. Garrett Nally's lands at Hollymount, County Mayo. The question of acquisition was considered fairly recently by the Land Commission, who decided to take no further action in the case for the present.

Am I to understand that the Land Commission will take no further action in this question or will the Minister give us a guarantee that the Land Commission will take action?

The last sentence of my reply is "The question of acquisition was considered fairly recently by the Land Commission, who decided to take no further action in the case for the present." The situation is that the Land Commission may not consider the land suitable for acquisition at the moment but circumstances may change so as to cause them to alter their opinion in the near future.

There should be no reason why this land should not be taken over because there are 700 acres of it in County Mayo alone.
