Vol. 111 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Board of Assistance Employees.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for Health if he will ensure that the recent 11/- increase granted to certain employees will be paid to board of assistance workers, some of whom are working 60 hours per week on small wages that have not been increased for the past three years.

Salaries of employees of public assistance authorities were revised as from 1st November, 1946. In general the revision resulted in increases of about 50 per cent. on 1939 salaries ranging up to approximately £400 per annum, but in the case of some of the more lowly-paid employees increases of 80 per cent to 100 per cent. were granted.

The payment of a further increase of 11/- a week to certain classes of employees of public assistance authorities is under consideration. I am very hopeful that I shall be able to give a decision in the very near future.

Mr. A. Byrne

Is the Minister aware that there are men working for 60 hours a week for less than £4, some of them on night work?

As I stated, this question is under review and I hope to give a decision on it in the near future.
