Vol. 111 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition and Division of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the lands known as Kilclooney Mountain, in the parish of Mothel, County Waterford, and now in the possession of the trustees of the Waterford estate, have been offered for afforestation; and, if so, whether it is proposed to acquire them; further, if he will, in the event of their acquisition, allow the people of the locality to continue to exercise their grazing rights over the portion not suitable for planting.

The lands known as Kilclooney Mountain have been offered for sale for afforestation purposes but I am not in a position to say whether it will be possible to come to terms with the estate.

If the area is acquired by the Forestry Division the grazing of the unplantable portion will be offered for letting as heretofore.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will arrange for the acquisition of the Smyth estate, Craggs, Borrigone, County Limerick, for division amongst the uneconomic holders and landless men of the area and so relieve the acute congestion existing there.

The Land Commission have at present under consideration the question of the institution of proceedings for the acquisition of the Smyth estate at Craggs, County Limerick.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will take steps to acquire the Moran ranch, Mitchelstown, Knocklong, County Limerick, for division amongst the uneconomic holders and landless men of the adjoining townlands.

The Land Commission have had the question of the acquisition of the Moran estate at Mitchels-towndown West, Knocklong, under consideration and have decided to take no action in the matter.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that on the Gough estate at Lough Cutra, Gort, County Galway, there is a portion of land of approximately 30 acres known locally as Situation Hill, held by his Department, which has been let for grazing for a number of years; and, if so, whether he will state if it is intended to have this land planted with trees, and, if not, whether he will consider having it divided among the smallholders in that area, some of whom have not even sufficient land to grow their own potatoes.

It has not been found possible to identify the area by its local name, but it is presumed that the Deputy refers to the only unplanted area beside Lough Cutra in the hands of the Forestry Division. Before this land was acquired by the Forestry Division, the Land Commission had intimated that it was not required for division and that it was not suitable for that purpose. Accordingly, it is proposed to plant the area in due course.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to acquire the estate of Mr. Otway G. Toler at Durrow, Tullamore, comprising approximately 500 acres of land, for division among landless men and uneconomic holders.

The Land Commission have no proceedings in respect of the estate of Mr. Otway G. Toler at Durrow, Tullamore.
