Vol. 111 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Paper.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether any of the classes of paper being imported to Ireland could be manufactured by our own paper mills at a comparative cost.

There are imports of printing, writing, packing, wrapping and Manila papers of the types which could be made by the Irish paper mills, but not at a comparative cost, because the Irish mills have to meet heavier charges than their foreign competitors for fuel as well as other items. I am prepared to recognise the disabilities under which the Irish producers are working in the consideration of applications they have submitted for reimposition of protective duties which have been suspended and for an extension in the protection afforded to them.
