Vol. 112 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scarcity of Copper Coins.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the cause of the scarcity of copper coins in the various banks and business houses in Dublin.

The information available from the Central Bank does not indicate any scarcity of copper coins in Dublin. The total circulation of Irish copper coins is about three times the pre-war figure and the same applies to nickel coins. Occasional shortages at bank offices can arise from the omission of traders to make lodgments of copper coins.

Is the Minister aware that there is dissatisfaction in the East Wall and other areas of Dublin because the gas company will not make more frequent collections of gas meters, and to that extent there is copper being kept out of circulation?

That is a different question.
