Vol. 112 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Low Flying Planes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that planes bound for Dublin Airport and machines on trial flights fly over the town of Malahide at a dangerously low level, causing annoyance to the residents there; and, if so, whether he will take the necessary remedial steps in this matter.

I am aware that aircraft approaching Dublin Airport pass near to Malahide when the main runway is being used. The Air Navigation Regulations prohibit flying over any city or town except at such altitude as will enable the aircraft to land outside the city or town in the event of engine failure or other mishap. I have no reason to believe that this requirement is not being fully observed, and I do not propose to take any action in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that some of these machines fly below the legal height?

My information is that they do not.

They must fly low if the cloud base is low.
