Vol. 112 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Pioneer Workers.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he now proposes to accede to the repeated representations made to him since early this year by the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union to have the scandalously low rates of wages of the pioneer workers employed by his Department in various military barracks throughout the country increased to the level of those paid to comparable workers in the employment of private persons in the same districts; and, if so, when and from what date.

The rates of pay of pioneers at various centres have recently been increased to the current rates paid by local authorities to road labourers. The only rates yet to be adjusted are those at Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Athlone. Suitable rates have been decided and will be paid in the near future with effect from 1st April, 1948.
