Vol. 112 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of County Council Workers.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is now prepared to sanction the payment by local authorities of all county council workers on a weekly basis; and, further, whether he would be prepared to sanction the payment of all such workers for broken time, etc.

I have always been in favour of the payment of wages weekly and by circular letter have urged county councils to adopt a system of weekly payment of road workers' wages. It is within the power of county councils to give their workers the benefit of weekly payments. They do not require my sanction to do so and I hope they will adopt the system of their own accord. In April last, I requested county councils to furnish information regarding the existing practice in regard to payment for broken time with a view to a full examination of the matter.
