Vol. 113 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Sluice Gates.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the satisfactory results obtained in a recent test, he intends to give a direction to have the sluice gates at Meelick, on the Shannon, opened whenever there is a danger of flooding in the regions above them.

The recent experiments carried out by manipulation of the sluices at Meelick indicate that under flood conditions the opening of the sluices at Meelick to their fullest extent has little effect on water levels on the Shannon.

The sluice keeper at Meelick has standing instructions to open the sluices there when there is danger of flooding between Meelick and Athlone.
