Vol. 113 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Surveyors' Salaries.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the inadequate salaries that are being paid to building surveyors employed by Dublin County Council; and, if so, whether he will examine their position and give them a salary in keeping with their qualifications.

Mr. Murphy

Any revisions of the salary and conditions of employment of these officers would be a matter for the local authority in the first instance.

Is the Minister aware that these building surveyors, who inspect buildings for small dwellings loans and for ordinary building construction, have not got a salary as high as some of the tradesmen who are working on these buildings? Up to six months ago they had a salary of £6 6s. 0d. a week, and out of that they had to provide their own transport. It should be borne in mind that a lot of these men have university degrees.

Mr. Murphy

The Deputy, I am sure will appreciate my inability to deal with this matter up to the present. The officers in question are employed by the Dublin County Council. The Deputy must know that it will be necessary for me to await whatever proposals the Dublin County Council have in mind in connection with those officers.
