Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Kerry Pier.

asked the Minister for Finance if plans and estimates of the cost of erection of a pier at Coornagileach, Tuosist, Kenmare, have been prepared and received official sanction; and whether, in view of the fact that the claim for the erection of this pier was first made about 15 years ago and of the urgent necessity for its speedy erection, he will ensure that the carrying out of the work will be expedited in every possible way.

A grant from the Employment Schemes Vote was sanctioned in 1938 towards the cost of constructing a pier at Coornagileach, County Kerry, but owing to difficulties created by two landowners whose interests would be affected by the proposed work it was not possible to proceed with the scheme, and the grant was cancelled.

The proposal was further considered when it became known, recently, that the opposition to the taking of the material for the erection of the pier had been withdrawn. The county council have submitted a revised estimate of the cost for the work; and a report is being obtained from the Department of Agriculture as to whether the expenditure now involved would be justified in the interests of the local agricultural and fishing industries.
