Vol. 114 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Solicitors Affected by Labour Court Orders.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of solicitors registered in his Department in relation to whom the Orders of the Labour Court fixing minimum rates of wages and prescribing conditions of employment for law clerks operate.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 24 and 25 together.

There is no statutory obligation to register in my Department solicitors in relation to whom the Orders of the Labour Court fixing minimum rates of wages and prescribing conditions of employment for law clerks operate. A list kept in the Department contains the names of 1,524 solicitors and firms of solicitors, all of whom are not necessarily employers.

The number of inspections made in 1948 is 24. Breaches of the statutory provisions were reported in eight cases.
