Vol. 114 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of the unsatisfactory progress made by the housing council in dealing with the housing problems in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area, he will consider the advisability of dissolving that body and replacing it by a more progressive one.

Mr. Murphy

The provision of houses for the working classes in Dún Laoghaire and the Rathdown area is the function of the housing authorities in the areas. The functions of the Dublin Housing Consultative Council include the co-ordination of the activities of housing authorities in Dublin City and County and I am satisfied with and grateful for the valuable assistance they are giving. I do not propose to take the action suggested by the Deputy.

Is the Minister aware that except for the activities of the borough council at Dún Laoghaire and very slight activities on the part of the county council, no progress has been made to house people in Dún Laoghaire who need houses?

Mr. Murphy

I think the Deputy, on closer consideration, will agree that that is hardly a correct presentation of the case. I share his anxiety in relation to this matter. Generally speaking, the amount of progress in both areas mentioned by the Deputy is, on the whole, very commendable.

In view of the urgency of this matter and the sufferings of the people concerned in the constituency I represent, I desire to give notice that I shall raise this matter on the Adjournment.
