Vol. 114 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Yields.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the yield per acre of wheat for the years 1946, 1947 and 1948, respectively.

The yields per acre for wheat harvested in 1946 and 1947 were 14.4 hundredweights and 10.8 hundredweights, respectively. The yield for 1948 has not yet been ascertained. The quantities delivered to the mills in each of the years mentioned were as follows: 1946, 2,524,514 barrels; 1947, 1,463,207 barrels; 1948, 2,463,613 barrels, and, taking 4 per cent. of the deliveries up to the 26th February as probable delivery between the 26th February and the end of the cereal year, we may expect total deliveries in respect of the 1948 crop to be 2,560,000 barrels, which would be the highest of any of the three years mentioned in the Deputy's question, and the highest of the last 15 years, with the exception of 1945-46.

I thought the land had gone out.

Thank God, compulsory tillage has gone out.
