The investigations of the committee referred to were terminated early last year. The circumstances were fully explained in my introductory speech on the Department's Estimate on the 9th June last. I have also made it clear publicly on a number of occasions that the termination of the long-term investigations of the committee in no way affects the discretion of local authorities to plan particular waterworks schemes on a regional basis where this course is found practicable and economic and unlikely to cause undue delay in the provision of essential services, including the servicing of new housing schemes.
