Vol. 114 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage in County Donegal.

asked the Minister for Finance whether an application was received by the Office of Public Works a year ago to have the drain in the townlands of Lenan and Urrismana, Electoral Division of Dunaff, County Donegal, cleaned; and if so, whether he will arrange to have this work carried out immediately.

When the Deputy's application for the work in question was received by the Special Employment Schemes Office in February, 1948, it was considered on its merits as an employment scheme. Employment schemes in rural areas are confined to the winter months when the Employment Period Orders are not in operation, and, as a rule, the winter is not a suitable time for drainage work. I will have the case looked into again in connection with next winter's employment programme.

If, however, the work is necessary apart from the question of relieving unemployment, it could, if the landholders were prepared to pay onequarter of the cost, be considered as a rural improvements scheme, and, if approved, could be carried out during the summer.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state when the Clonmany River will be deepened and cleaned.

An application for a grant for the work in question was received by the Special Employment Schemes Office some time ago, but as the work is one which could only be executed satisfactorily during the summer it was considered unsuitable for inclusion in the employment schemes programme, which in rural areas in confined to the winter months when the Employment Period Orders are not in operation.
