Vol. 114 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Rights on Inny River.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that licensed rod fishermen are prevented from fishing the Inny River from Ballynacargy to Lough Ree even for pike, perch or any rough fish; and if so, whether he will take action, if necessary by the introduction of proposals for legislation, to have this situation changed.

I have no information regarding the prevention of fishing in the Inny River referred to in the Deputy's question, but if he will furnish me with the relevant details, I will see whether anything can be done by me to compose any local differences which may exist. It must, of course, be understood that there is no public right of fishing in fresh water nor could such be established even by long continued usage. It is always open to those holding such rights to permit others to fish on their property, and it is not proposed to legislate for the purpose of compelling them to do so.
