Vol. 115 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ex-Army Men and Civil Service Appointments.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of Army officers, N.C.O.s and privates, with emergency service who sat for competitions as (1) junior executive officers or (2) clerical officers in the Civil Service; the number who were successful in the written part; the number called before the interviewing board and the number of successful applicants appointed to posts (1) and (2) above after interview.

The information sought is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be published in the Official Report.

An interview did not form part of the competitions for posts as clerical officer. The order of merit for such posts was determined by the marks awarded at the written examination combined with the marks awarded for Defence Force service.

It is not possible to obtain separate figures in respect of officers, N.C.O.s and men in the limited time available.

In the case of the 1946 competitions for both executive officers and clerical officers and the 1947 competition for clerical officers it was decided to offer appointments to all the candidates who qualified in the competitions. A number, however, declined appointment or were rejected for health or other reasons. The number of actual appointments shown from each of these competitions represents, therefore, the number who were available for appointment and who were found qualified in all respects. In the case of the 1947 competition for posts as executive officer the number appointed was 25 but four others declined posts. The number offered appointment was, therefore, 29.
