Vol. 115 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Market for Duck Eggs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that serious financial loss is caused to egg producers and exporters because of the fact that there is no sure market for duck eggs; and, if so, whether he will try to secure a firm price for these eggs either at home or abroad.

Duck eggs have not been exported from this country since 1941 and, as producers have been aware for nearly nine years that there is no outlet for such eggs except on the home market, I am not satisfied that they are suffering serious financial losses on the sale of eggs. In my recent discussions with the British Ministry of Food I endeavoured to persuade them to purchase duck eggs, but owing to the poor keeping quality of these eggs, the Ministry were not prepared to accept them. As there is no outlet on any other export market for duck eggs, the demand on the home market must determine the price.
