Vol. 115 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Johnstown Castle Agricultural College.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that although the steward of Johnstown Castle Agricultural College, County Wexford, is eminently qualified to purchase and sell live stock, and is, in fact, responsible for sales, another person having no connection with the college retains a monopoly for the purchase of stock; and, further, if he will state what commissions have been earned through the purchase of stock for the year ended 31st March, 1949.

I am aware that for several years past an arrangement has been in operation by which cattle required for Johnstown Castle Agricultural College are purchased through a dealer. The arrangement has proved to be a satisfactory one. The price paid is related to current market value and includes a commission of 5/- per head to cover the dealer's expenses in attending fairs and assembling the cattle. The total commissions earned in the year ended 31st March, 1949, amounted to £19 10s.
