Vol. 115 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state, in respect of the period since the end of the employment periods, 1948 (i) the total number of registered unemployed persons without means or dependents (a) who were offered employment through his Department; (b) who refused such offers; (c) whose refusal caused forfeiture of unemployment assistance, and (d) whose refusal did not cause such forfeiture; and (ii) the monthly average number of (a) registrants, and (b) unemployment assistance recipients belonging to both classifications.

The information which the Deputy requires is not available nor are the records of my Department so kept as to enable it to be readily collected. The compilation of the information would entail a considerable amount of work in the offices of my Department and owing to the time and labour involved I do not feel justified in arranging to have the work undertaken.

I might, however, add that I am anxious that particulars such as those asked for by the Deputy should be readily available and I am having the position examined with that object in view.
