Vol. 116 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crumbling Stonework in Public Buildings.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the dilapidated condition of portion of the facing stone in the National Museum and other public buildings in Kildare Street; if he will say (i) what type of stone this is; (ii) whether other portions of this stone had to be replaced some years ago; and (iii) if it is intended to replace the remaining crumbling portion of this stone by Irish granite.

The defective stonework of the facades of the National Library and National Museum buildings, Kildare Street, has been under observation for some time and plans and specifications for renewal are in course of preparation. The defective stonework is chiefly sandstone. A certain amount of restoration work was carried out in granite about 1935, and it is the intention to complete the renewal either in Irish granite or limestone.
