Vol. 117 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schull Breakwater.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate (i) what is the present position of the scheme for the provision of a breakwater in Schull, and (ii) what progress, if any, has been made in the matter in the last 12 months.

I would refer the Deputy to the letter issued to him from my office on 30th April, 1948, stating that the provision of a breakwater at Schull could not be undertaken as a scheme for the relief of unemployment, and pointing out that the Cork County Council, who are responsible for the maintenance of the existing pier, should submit to the Department of Agriculture, for that Department's consideration, proposals for whatever improvements they, the council, may consider necessary.

I am advised by the Department of Agriculture that no representations on the matter have since been received from the county council.

Is the position in connection with the breakwater at Schull that the matter cannot be dealt with by the central authority until such time as the county council moves?

That is what I am informed.
