Vol. 117 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Creamery Suppliers' Difficulties.

Mr. Murphy

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that considerable inconvenience is being caused to the farmers and milk producers in the Droumclough, Coomleigh, Gurthnacouley and surrounding townlands because of the distance they reside from a creamery; and, if so, whether he will take steps to provide a travelling creamery for this area.

The answer to the first part of the question is "no". Without more information than is at present available it is not possible to say whether the operation of a travelling creamery in the area referred to by the Deputy would be economically practicable, but if he will be good enough to let me have particulars of the number of milk producers concerned, the quantity of milk available, and the distance from each producer's holding to the nearest cream-separating station, I will have the matter investigated.

Pending examination of the matter, I would urge that advantage be taken of the concession granted by the Government under the Carriage of Milk Order, 1949, which up to the end of September enables milk to be transported for reward by a local haulier even though he may not have a general merchandise licence.
