Vol. 117 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle for Germany.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will make arrangements to allocate a quota of Irish cattle and sheep for shipment to occupied Germany to be paid for in dollars or in exchange for goods normally purchased for the Republic of Ireland in the dollar countries.

Arrangements have already been made for an allocation of fat cattle to Western Germany for the 1949-50 season. I am not aware that Western Germany requires sheep and, in any event, in view of the limited numbers we have for export and the recent price agreement with the British Ministry of Food, there is no need to seek a market for sheep on the Continent. All exports to Western Germany rank, of course, as hard currency exports.
