Vol. 117 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shortage of Hides.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the curtailment of slaughtering by the canning and dressed meat industry is resulting in a shortage of hides for tanning, that in consequence a large number of employees of tanneries are being put out of employment or on short time; and, if so, what he proposes to do to prevent factories from going out of production of dressed and tinned meat.

As no curtailment of either the canning or dressed meat industry has taken place, I do not know what the Deputy is referring to. If he has anything in particular in mind. I shall be glad to examine it if he will furnish me with details.

I am satisfied that the hide situation would be greatly improved if the serious manipulation of prices to the detriment of the farmer which has been practised for many years were put an end to.

Why not do it?

Wait and see.

Why wait?
