Vol. 117 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Penalisation of Gardaí.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has had any representations on behalf of members of the Garda Síochána who were penalised during the years 1932 to 1948, and if he proposes to set up a tribunal to examine these cases and report the facts to him.

I have received certain representations from time to time. In most of these cases the penalties imposed were merited under the Code and I would be setting myself an impossible task were I to review every case in which a member of the Force had incurred a disciplinary penalty or failed to receive promotion. In a few instances a prima facie case appears to have been made out and I am having these cases examined.

Is the Minister satisfied that during the period mentioned in the question there were cases of victimisation?

I am satisfied that, in a certain number of cases, there was victimisation and I am having these cases examined.

Will the Minister take steps to ensure that full particulars of these cases are published in the Dáil?

Is the Minister aware that a Guard in North Cork was transferred due to the fact that he reported a member of this House for travelling in a car on which the tax was not paid?

The same publicity will be given as was given after the Inquiry in 1933.

The same as in Colonel Neligan's case?
