Vol. 117 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin-Dalkey Last Tram Scenes.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state (i) what special precautions were taken to preserve public order and protect property on the occasion of the last journey of the Dublin-Dalkey tram; (ii) the estimated figure of damage caused to (a) Córas Iompair Éireann property; (b) other property; (iii) whether he expects claims for malicious damages to be made, and (iv) whether any persons are being charged in connection with this disturbance and destruction of property.

A force of 60 guards, including 2 superintendents, 1 inspector, 8 sergeants and 3 motor-cyclists were placed on duty over the route. The crowds were so big, however, that even this force failed to prevent souvenir hunters from damaging the trams. Córas Iompair Éireann made no complaint to the police in regard to the damage and have not given notice of an application for compensation. The police are not in a position to give an estimate of the extent of the damage. As far as the police are aware, no property other than the trams was damaged. No person is being charged in connection with the matter.
