Vol. 117 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the great need of a water supply in Dundrum village, County Tipperary, and if, in view of the danger to health due to the lack of it he will assure the residents of this village that a proper water supply will be installed in the near future.

This is a matter for the local authority. Dundrum has been placed fourth in the list of water supplies certified as urgent by the county medical officer. No proposals for a supply have been submitted to the Department but I understand from the local authority that investigations are proceeding with a view to determining the most suitable source from which an adequate supply could be obtained for the village of Dundrum while also serving other places in the vicinity.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is not even the proverbial village pump in use in this village and that the only source of supply is a private pump which the owner is good enough to make available to the people of the village? I would also ask him if he is aware that the residents of the village had to purchase disinfectants at their own expense recently with a view to killing the stench in the main drain?

I am quite prepared to believe all the Deputy has said but he will appreciate that the Minister is unable to do anything inasmuch as there are no proposals for the provision of a water supply there. In any case, I should like to remind the Deputy that the county medical officer of health considers that it should be put only fourth on the list of priorities.
