Vol. 118 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Statistical Information.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each of the years 1947 and 1948: (a) the total national income; (b) the amount paid in wages; (c) the amount paid in salaries; (d) the amount paid in interest; (e) the amount paid in rent; and (f) the amount paid in food subsidies.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state when the estimates of national income and expenditure for any period subsequent to 1944 will be published.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to reply to Questions Nos. 2 and 3 together.

The Central Statistics Office is at present engaged in the preparation of up-to-date estimates of the national income, national expenditure and cognate matters in continuation of the statistics published in the White Paper entitled "National Income and Expenditure, 1938-1944". It is hoped that the results will be available next year.

A rough estimate of £320,000,000 (of which the agricultural income was estimated at £100,000,000) has been furnished for the year 1947, but the estimated amounts at each of the headings (b) to (e) of Deputy Hickey's question are not available. As regards (f), the amounts paid in food subsidies in the financial years 1947-48 and 1948-49 were £10,709,652 and £14,680,882 respectively.
