Vol. 118 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dollar Exchange Value of £.

asked the Minister for Finance if he can state whether the Irish £ has a higher exchange value in America than the English £; and if so, whether he will consider taking steps to adjust the position.

The official rate of exchange between the dollar and the Irish £ is the same as the official rate of exchange between the dollar and sterling. I am aware that Irish legal tender notes and consolidated bank notes have been bought and sold in the United States of America at higher prices than those paid for sterling bank notes by reason of the fact that re-entry of the latter notes into the sterling area is prohibited except in amounts not exceeding £5 carried on the person of travellers. The answer to the second part of the question, the implications of which are not clear, is in the negative.
