Vol. 118 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Córas Iompair Éireann Compensation Liability.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that Córas Iompair Éireann, under its existing by-laws, is not liable for payment of compensation or damages for injury to or death of passengers travelling in its vehicles on excursion tickets or tickets issued at reduced rates, even where such injury or death is caused by the negligence of the company; and, if so, whether in view of the unsatisfactory position he will introduce proposals for legislation to prevent Córas Iompair Éireann and every other transport undertaking in the State from contracting out of liability in such cases.

The position to which the Deputy has drawn attention is one of long standing. I propose to examine the matter fully, to see if any legislative provision is necessary or desirable.
